New Domain!

As a photographer, I have been meaning to build my own portfolio and write more about photography. Some day, i hope to possibly write a book about this. With this in mind, i have now created a new website: http://www.8thcross.com/ and a new blog dedicated to photography at http://www.8thcross.com/blog/

If you are interested in photography, and would like to join me in blogging together, feel free to drop me a line!

Ofcourse, i plan to write on this blog as often as possible, but on all the other subjects.

Photography & my obsession

Its been a while since i wrote last…but fact is, i have been obsessed with photography…i guess i had a creativity block for while when i shot only with a P&S (2 years actually)…now that i finally got my DSLR, i am back! baby.

Although i have been shooting for a while now (almost 15 years), i am still an amateur. Possibly because i have no style, dont shoot anything specific (Portraits, Street, Travel, Family, Nature, Landscape etc).
First, i need to figure out what to focus on – I think its mostly going to be People (Portraits, Wedding & Children). Not that i will not shoot other things, but i need to focus my energies in shooting the above more.

Next, i need to develop a style. Not sure what that means.

Finally, need to network with people, learn from them (workshops, meetups etc) and present myself and my work (Business cards, Portfolio, Online Portfolio) etc.

Lookout on my next blog entry to be an article on how to create an Online Portfolio.

Foto tip #2

Note: These are my “notes” from experience for my own quick reference. However, if my tip helps, a comment would be nice :)

How to take better exposures: First take your eyes off the camera! You need to see through your eyes, Judge the darkest and brighest spots in the scene. Switch to spot metering and Manual mode. Meter the darkest spot in the scene that you need to capture (such as greenery in a landscape), Change mode to Manual and choose an aperture. This can be one of the many values depending on the scene: f8-f11 usually ok for normal street scenes, f11-f22 would be nice for landscape. Optionally focus on the hyperfocal distance if you know what that is (more on this in a future tip). if you dont know what that is, just focus on infinity. Change shutter speed until your meter reads correct exposure, then take take 3 pictures. Read the rest of this entry »

American Marketing….

It made me angry and mad at big store <name withheld> today…the lady at the counter said “Would you like to save children? Its a dollar…”…well…First, i it was that cheap, i would have done it a while ago…second, it was obvious from the signs by her that they were collecting for charity…but thats no way to ask a question….no person with the heart in the right place would say “no”…

But I did. Said “No”. My reasoning is simple – When <big store> gives their collection to the charity – they dont use my name (and all the others who donated)…- They keep the publicity to themselves….Not to mention the benefits of Taxes….

Thank you very much…i give my own charity, when i feel like it – And its definitely more than a dollar!

Now…if they only stop asking that stupid question “Are you sure, you are declining liability insurance? huh? Sign 5 times here and initial 3 times here…and be ready to pay your deductable when you drop the car off…”

Rethinking Lens measurements…

I am not sure why camera manufacturers insist on using the film standard for measuring lens focal lengths – DSLRs (alteast all prosumer, some pro) have an obvious multipler and its often confusing to multiply what the real focal length is…..An example is that a 50mm lens on camera with a multiplier of 1.5 actually looks like a 75mm lens.

Olympus…are you listening?

Olympus, because they seem to be THE pioneers when it comes to digital photography -with their “Live View”, “4/3″ and such things…

Just my 2 cents…

Notes from the Balloon Fest…

It has been kinda annual visit…but, this time i can see a remarkable increase in awareness and most importantly, everybody out there seem to have a DSLR…are they cheap now? And everyone out there had good awareness as well – with Sturdy Tripods, Long zooms…felt like visiting a race track actually…in the pit area…with professionals…but, they were not…why else would they be with us commoners? OMG – I just ordered a DSLR!

Like most desis, living in the US of A, i have been doing my part of justice in participating in the “usual” desi things…..piligrimage to the usual places such as Niagara Falls, NYC, DC, SFO, LA, Disney World etc…and play tennis…and dabbled in photography….and did my MS….and so on…

And desite not saving up (thank god for credit cards), managed to watch the B&H website like a hawk, and ordered one soon as the much anticipated D70s showed up in the used section. B&H gives it a 9+, so i am happy….looking forward to sell my G3…any takers? See pictures below!
